Blog Post 2: 2K vs 4K DCP: Which One Should You Choose?
One of the most common questions we get from filmmakers is: should I make my DCP in 2K or 4K?
What’s the Difference?
- 2K resolution = 2048 x 1080 pixels
- 4K resolution = 4096 x 2160 pixels
4K has four times the pixels of 2K, which can mean sharper image detail—especially on very large screens.
Do Film Festivals Require 4K? In most cases, no. The majority of film festivals screen in 2K. In fact, many theatrical projectors are still 2K. That means submitting a 4K DCP often doesn’t give your film any visual advantage at the festival level.
When Should You Choose 4K?
- If your film was shot and finished in true 4K.
- If you know the venue supports 4K playback.
- If your distributor or festival specifically requests it.
When 2K Makes More Sense
- Your source material is HD (1920×1080) or below.
- You want to keep file sizes and transfer times down.
- You’re on a tight budget (Criolla’s 2K DCPs start at just $99!)
